Marcela Prikryl

Marcela Prikryl received her PhD in Materials Science at the Technical University in Ostrava, and also attended the Ostrava School of Art in the Czech Republic. In Canada, she studied at the Dundas Valley School of Art and the Halliburton School of Art.

Dr. Prikryl has worked as a scientist at the Technical University in Ostrava and McMaster University in Hamilton. In 1997, she received the prestigious International Vanadium Award from the Institute for Materials in London for her research in the field of microalloyed steels.

She has been very active in the arts community of Southern Ontario, has worked at the McMaster Museum of Art and served on the Board of the Carnegie Gallery. For the last twelve years she has served on the Board of Governors of the Dundas Valley School of Art, incl. as Chairman.

Marcela Prikryl works in a variety of media, including pen and ink, oil, acrylics, chalk pastel, and printmaking.  She has shown her work in Canada and Europe, and has won numerous awards at juried shows. Her love of portraiture has led to a number of private commissions.  Her work can be found in private collections in both North America and Europe. Series of her drawings have been published in a local newspaper under the headline Postcards from Old Europe. Her courtroom drawings have been regularly featured in The Hamilton Spectator. She has taught workshops in printmaking and portrait drawing.
