Magdolene Dykstra – New ceramic sculptures
February 1–24, 2013
Opening reception Friday, February 1, 7-9:30 pm
‘Dykstra explores through her sculptures, our conflicted existence, while offering her subjects a moment of sympathy in the midst of tension. She will present 16 torsos in fired clay, based on sketches of people some known some unknown.’ Her portrayal of solitude in these characters is influenced by the Egyptian tradition of making canopic jars as preparation for the afterlife. In Dykstra’s work, her surface treatment represents entrapment.
Dykstra has worked in clay while studying fine arts at Houghton College NY, Burlington Potters’ Guild and working in the Mentorship programme with ceramic sculptor, Ann Roberts.
