Gise Trauttmansdorff

Gise TrauttmansdorffAncaster, ON

Born in Graz, Austria, Gise studied Art at the ‘Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst’ in Vienna and then received a degree in Architecture from the ‘Technische Universität’ in Graz.  This background is evident in the exquisite technical detail of her work.  Her ceramic raku-fired sculpture manipulates space and form through composition, and explores the poetic relationship between inner and outer space through open and closed forms.  This duality is extended to the surface detail by juxtaposing textures and colours, light and shadow, and contrasting fragility with coarseness.  Gise has an appreciation for weathered, aged surfaces and subtle colour, and more conceptually a desire to create a sense of memory through them. Each piece is formed from a clay slab ensuring that no two pieces are ever the same.   She has exhibited her work in numerous group shows, and has been an active member of the Dundas Vallery School of Art Board of Governors.  Her work can be found in collections in Canada, the U.S., Europe, South Africa and Japan.
