On the Rock – A Rocha
Merging Art and Ecology
March 7 to March 30, 2014
Opening reception Friday March 7, 7-9:30pm
This exhibition has been initiated through the not-for-profit group called A Rocha. The works produced by the 10 artists have been inspired by a 95 acre property called Cedar Haven Farm just west of Freelton, Ontario. Their objective in creating their art is based on this question, “Who are we and what are we doing here?”. “The rich diversity of farm land, swamp, forest, grasslands, and rocky uplands will open the conversation between both living and non-living parts of creation; begging to be part of our sense of place and identity, shaping us and the way we live. This will be an inspiring and educational exhibition – a chance for local Hamiltonians to reconnect with local people and places”
The artists: Kim Rempel, acrylics; Ralph Heather, wood block printing; Janusz Wrobel, photography; Lorraine Roy, art textiles; Aleda O’Connor, oil pastel; Barry Coombs, watercolour; Kristen Brittain, pottery; Floyd Elzinga, sculpture; Guennadi Kalinine, painting and drawing; Diana Scholtens, textile. These artists are mostly local to the Greater Hamilton area and a few are Carnegie Gallery members, and teachers as well. They all have an affinity with our natural environment, sharing their views using their various chosen mediums.
